Nima Nassiri started with UFCP in 2021 as a painter for the summer, and he found the position and painting business so rewarding that he applied to become a Franchise Manager for 2023. He excelled as a manager, achieving runner-up for our 2023 National Rookie of the Year award ! Nima runs his painting business out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia!
He completed his first degree at York University in 2019, where he finished a Bachelor of Science with a major in Psychology. Since 2019, he’s been working towards his second Bachelor of Science, with a major in Biology and a minor in Economics.
Q: How does a typical day start?
“The typical day starts bright and early. I get to my sites starting at 8:00am to make sure my painters know what we need to get done that day, to answer any questions they may have, and to bring any supplies that were used up the previous day. After setting up my painters, I leave the job sites and spend the rest of the morning marketing and estimating.”
Q: What do you do in between checking in on sites?
“In between sites, I market my territory, purchase paint and supplies so my jobs continue smoothly, deal with my customers, and do estimates for new potential clients.”
Q: What happens when the day/job is done?
“When the day is about to wrap up, I go back to my sites to check up on progress and make sure my painters are properly cleaning up the site. If the customer is home, I chat with them to give them an update on the job progress.”
Q: What happens when it’s a rainy day?
“On a rainy day, I call my past client list to see if anybody is looking to get any more painting done. If it is not raining hard, I like to get out and cold call. I also find it best to pressure wash houses on rainy days. It is also best to purchase paint and supplies on rainy days, so that when the next job is approaching, I can skip a trip to the paint store. The last thing I do on rain days is following-up with clients who I have quoted.”
Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of running your own painting business?
“The most rewarding aspect of running my own painting business is being successful. I take a lot of pride in my work, and being able to do it well is very rewarding, especially because this is my career.”
Q: What was the biggest learning curve in running your painting business?
“The biggest learning curve in running my own painting business was how to manage my time efficiently. There is so much to do in a day, and learning how to balance each task takes time and experience.”
Q: What was your favorite experience/moment/story with running your business?
“My favorite experience running a painting business was after completing one of my first jobs. When the job was done, I did a walk-around with the customer and they were extremely happy with the work. It was very satisfying seeing that; it made me eager to get back out there and grow my business…”
Running a painting business isn’t the only thing Nima likes to spend his time doing. When he’s not focused on his business, Nima likes to play his guitar, work out and spend time with his wife.
“My wife and I are foodies, so we spend a lot of time cooking delicious meals together”.
The knowledge he gained with UFCP doesn’t only help with running a successful painting business.
“UFCP has taught me how to deal with unexpected challenges on a daily basis… I learned how to deal with these situations effectively. This has helped me deal with certain challenges in my personal life and I’ve found it’s easier to deal with hiccups and road bumps in daily life”
After a very successful first year, Nima is continuing his business in Dartmouth into 2024 where he hopes to keep very busy! He plans on using all the skills he learned in 2023 to scale his business; hoping to increase his revenues by 3x in the coming painting season!
“The biggest piece of advice I would give myself if I were starting my very first summer of management with UFCP over again is to spend more time on things that grow my business… I learned early on that my time is best spent training my crews, marketing and growing my customer base.”
